Dr. Muhammad Rashid

Dr. Muhammad Rashid is professor of electrical engineering and director of cybersecurity engineering opportunities at 91鶹ӳ Polytechnic University.

Over a 50-year career, Dr. Muhammad Rashid has become a towering figure in the world of electrical engineering. Universities around the world use his textbooks, top industry organizations seek his input, and lines for autographs after his speaking engagements can stretch for an hour or more.

But at 91鶹ӳ Polytechnic University, all students have to do to get his attention is raise their hand during class.

“My view is that these are young people, and we need to give them the tools for lifelong abilities so they can explore the world,” said Rashid, director of cybersecurity engineering opportunities and professor of electrical engineering. “It doesn’t have to be a gold or silver key, as long as they can open the door and explore.”

Rashid has built an internationally recognized career, earning high distinction in both industry and academia. This year, ScholarGPS named him among the top 0.5% of scientists and researchers in the world. He also ranked in the top 0.8% for electrical and computer engineering, top 0.5% for electric power, and top 0.2% for power electronics, which is his specialty.

A world-renowned scholar, Rashid has published over 160 technical papers and 30 books, which have been translated into dozens of languages and used at over 50 universities around the world, including Purdue University and UC Berkeley. During the 2024-2025 academic year alone, he published three new textbooks.

Since 2020, Rashid has also been included on Stanford’s prestigious annual list of the world’s top 2% of scientists. He is a life fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and a fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology.

Despite his global recognition, Rashid finds his greatest fulfillment in the classroom, inspiring students to make their mark on their field.

“Each student is somebody’s dream – their parents’, grandparents’ or siblings’ – and we need to support them,” he said

Rashid recalled a time recently when his daughter, a physician, spoke with a patient whose son studied computer engineering, and his girlfriend electrical engineering at 91鶹ӳ Poly.

“My daughter said that I am a professor here and the lady was surprised and said, ‘Oh, your father! Everybody talks about your father. He’s the GOAT,’” he said, chuckling at being called the greatest of all time. “They said that without me they would not have found a job.”

One of Rashid’s priorities as a professor is offering students practical, real-world applications of the technical skills he teaches, opting for assignments and assessments that focus on developing individual solutions rather than textbook memorization.

“I think education is key for a person’s success in the world,” he said. “It’s the key not only for a financially solid future, but it makes a person grow.”

Rashid joined 91鶹ӳ Poly in 2017 and served as chair of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. A dedicated philanthropist, he has funded several University scholarships and its first endowed chair.

“My question is, ‘How can you help when someone is struggling?’ Don’t tell me they are not studying; they are not smart; they are not serious,” he said. “With the right support, we can give all of them opportunity.”
